With just 10 days left before the August 15 deadline to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), Nagpur’s Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) are witnessing growing frustration among vehicle owners—especially those whose mobile numbers aren’t linked to their Registration Certificates (RCs).
The state-mandated campaign, which began on January 1, 2025, requires all vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2019, to upgrade to HSRP. Despite three deadline extensions, the rush to comply is now creating bottlenecks, particularly for those unable to complete the process online.
Many vehicle owners, especially senior citizens and daily wage earners, are forced to queue at the RTO offices after failed online attempts. In most cases, outdated mobile numbers linked to the RC have become the main hurdle. While Nagpur Rural RTO reportedly updates numbers within a day, the City RTO is taking up to a week—and requires applicants to run between three different windows.
Drivers like Sunil, whose RC still lists an inactive number, have been left in limbo. “They told me my new number will be updated in a week, but why does such a small process take so long?” he asked.
Citizens are now urging Transport Commissioner officials to intervene and streamline the process, especially as the deadline approaches. Without immediate reforms, the backlog may result in thousands missing the deadline—not due to negligence, but due to red tape.
