A Friendship Day celebration titled Friends & Beyond at Eden Greenz on Kamptee Road took a dramatic turn on Sunday night when police intervened following a complaint about a squabble between two groups. The incident has sparked controversy after a video emerged showing the organiser allegedly invoking the name of Maharashtra’s Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule to dissuade police from taking action.
According to police, the altercation broke out during the late-night party, prompting Old Kamptee police to rush to the venue. Officers stopped the music and restored order after finding a heated exchange among guests.
The now-viral video, recorded after police intervention, captures a member of the organising committee purportedly threatening officers, claiming he could “directly talk to Bawankule” if needed. The clip has drawn sharp criticism and embarrassment within sections of the Nagpur police.
Old Kamptee police station in-charge Prashant Jumde confirmed that officers responded to a call about a fight at the venue. “We found a young crowd arguing. Preventive measures were taken, the music was stopped, and the matter was resolved amicably without filing an FIR,” he said.
However, sources revealed that when an officer asked the organiser to speak with a senior official regarding alleged misbehaviour, he responded by openly dropping the minister’s name.
DCP Zone V Niketan Kadam said he had reviewed the video and would summon the organiser for questioning. He stressed that political name-dropping was unacceptable and assured that the matter would be investigated thoroughly.
Nagpur has witnessed multiple instances of event organisers allegedly misusing political connections to pressure law enforcement. This latest episode has reignited concerns about the influence of political clout on policing.
