A tragic incident has come to light in the Samarth Nagari area under Sonegaon Police Station limits, where an 80-year-old homeopathy doctor allegedly consumed poison along with his 70-year-old wife due to prolonged illness. The man died on the spot, while his wife remains in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
According to police reports, the deceased has been identified as Gangadhar Balaji Harne (80), a practicing homeopathy doctor, and his wife as Nirmala Harne (70). The couple lived alone at Plot No. 104 in Samarth Nagari. Their son works at a steel plant in Jharkhand, while their married daughter is a teacher at a private school.
Gangadhar Harne was reportedly suffering from severe stomach and dental ailments and had been undergoing treatment for a long time. Frustrated by his deteriorating health, the couple allegedly consumed poison on Wednesday morning in an apparent suicide attempt. A suicide note was recovered from the house, in which the couple clearly stated that no one should be held responsible for their decision.
The incident came to light when neighbors noticed Gangadhar lying unconscious in the house’s passage and immediately informed the couple’s daughter and the police. The daughter rushed home and admitted her parents to a private hospital, where doctors declared Gangadhar dead during initial examination, while Nirmala remains in critical condition.
Sonegaon police reached the spot and seized a poison container and the suicide note. The incident has left the local community in shock and grief. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
