NAGPUR: Residents of Nagpur and other parts of Vidarbha may finally get a brief respite from the sweltering heat, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rainfall across the region starting August 8.
For over a week, Vidarbha has been reeling under oppressive weather conditions, with daytime temperatures consistently exceeding 32°C and humidity levels crossing 70%, making the heat unbearable. Even the nights have offered little relief, with minimum temperatures remaining abnormally high.
According to the IMD, the anticipated evening thunderstorms and light showers are expected to bring temporary relief by lowering humidity levels. However, officials cautioned that the comfort will likely be short-lived, as no low-pressure area or cyclonic activity has formed over the Bay of Bengal — a key driver of rainfall in central India.
“A decent amount of moisture is present in the atmosphere, but due to the lack of cloud cover, humidity continues to rise,” said a senior meteorologist. “From August 7, cloud formation is expected, which may help in bringing down humidity levels to some extent.”
Explaining the broader weather trend, experts said the monsoon trough has shifted northward to the Himalayan region, causing heavy rainfall in northern states. Normally, Vidarbha relies on Bay of Bengal systems to bring in monsoon rains, but the current absence of a low-pressure zone has stalled that process.
On Tuesday, Chandrapur recorded the highest maximum temperature in the region at 36.0°C, followed by Brahmapuri (35.6°C), Wardha (35.5°C), Akola (35.2°C), and Bhandara (35.0°C). Nagpur and Amravati both saw temperatures peak at 34.6°C, the highest this monsoon season. Other districts, including Yavatmal, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Buldhana, and Washim, also reported maximum temperatures above seasonal averages, ranging between 2.1°C and 6.0°C above normal.
All 12 districts of Vidarbha are currently experiencing above-normal heat, underscoring the urgency for rain relief in the coming days.
