The newly constructed Pratap Nagar-II water tank in Shanti Niketan Colony has become a major concern for local residents. Instead of being used for water supply, the site has turned into a den for anti-social elements. According to a media report, the area is littered with liquor bottles, glasses, and bottle caps, suggesting it is being misused as a makeshift bar.
It appears that an open-air liquor den is operating openly under the very nose of the authorities. Despite the responsibility for the water tank’s security lying with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Orange City Water (OCW) Pvt Ltd, no action has been taken to prevent the misuse of the premises.
Earlier, the police had taken action against a few miscreants following complaints from residents, but the issue continues to persist. Sources reveal that a stove has been installed in the security guard’s room, where these individuals allegedly cook meat. Disturbingly, used contraceptives have also been found on the premises, raising serious concerns about the questionable activities taking place at the site.
Scattered liquor bottles, glasses, and bottle caps can be seen across the premises of the water tank, highlighting its misuse. A similar situation has been reported at the Pratap Nagar-I water tank located in Vidya Vihar Colony. Ironically, residents had initially opposed the construction of the Pratap Nagar-I tank. Yet this year, both Pratap Nagar-I and II have experienced the worst water shortages, according to locals.
Residents of Pratap Nagar are urging the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and OCW by Veolia to strengthen security measures and install CCTV cameras for 24/7 surveillance around the water tanks.
They are also demanding a police crackdown on vehicles parked in dark, secluded spots in the area, which are allegedly being used as mobile bars. These activities are causing serious discomfort to senior citizens and women. Locals have suggested that the police launch an ‘Operation Parked Cars’, similar to the ongoing ‘Operation U-Turn’ being implemented across the city.
