Raksha Bandhan in 2025 will be celebrated on Saturday, August 9. As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the Purnima (Full Moon) of the Shravan month, marking the last day of Sawan. On this special day, sisters tie the Raksha Sutra (Rakhi) on their brothers’ wrists, wishing them protection and a long life.
While celebrating this beautiful bond, it’s important to follow certain traditions and avoid common mistakes. Here are 10 things you should not do on Raksha Bandhan:
10 Mistakes to Avoid on Raksha Bandhan
1. Not Offering Rakhi to Deities First
Before tying Rakhi to your brother, it is considered auspicious to first offer it to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Lord Hanuman, and Lord Krishna.
2. Ignoring the Auspicious Time
Avoid tying Rakhi during Rahu Kaal or Bhadra Kaal, as it is believed to bring bad luck. Always follow the Shubh Muhurat mentioned in the Panchang.
3. Using Torn or Black Rakhis
Do not use Rakhis that are black, torn, or damaged, as they are considered inauspicious and may attract negative energy.
4. Choosing Impure or Plastic Rakhis
Avoid Rakhis made of plastic, inauspicious symbols, or those with pictures of deities.
5. Not Covering the Head During the Ritual
Both brother and sister should cover their heads while performing the Rakhi ceremony to show respect for tradition.
6. Skipping the Raksha Bandhan Mantra
While tying the Rakhi, chant the mantra:
“Yen baddho Baliraja, danavendro mahabalah, tena tvam prati bandhnami, rakshe maachala maachala.”
This invokes divine protection for the brother.
7. Using the Wrong Tilak
Always use roli (kumkum) or sandalwood paste for tilak. Avoid vermilion (sindoor) and make sure the rice grains (akshat) are whole and unbroken.
8. Brother Facing South
The brother should not face south while the Rakhi is being tied.
9. Using a Broken Diya or Skipping Dakshina
Never use a broken diya (lamp) for aarti. After the aarti, the brother should offer dakshina (a token or gift) before getting up.
10. Not Showing Respect After Tying Rakhi
If the sister is elder, the brother should touch her feet after the ceremony. If the brother is elder, the sister may touch his feet.
