Several social media handles have shared news about the Indian Postal Department’s decision to stop the postal box service from September 1, 2025. The announcement has sparked nostalgia among the public, with many recalling childhood memories. Some remembered the days when ‘Rakhis’ were delivered through the post.
However, the news is misleading, as the Indian Postal Department has no plans to stop the postbox service. The department has only issued a directive to merge the Registered Post service with the Speed Post service.
According to a media report, “There are no such instruc-tions to discontinue the postbox service, and they will continue to operate even after September 1,” said a source from the postal department. “Closing of this service will be hugely disadvan-tageous to citizens and will cause huge loss to the department,” added the source.
For those who may not know, a postal box is used to send regular mail with a postage stamp and the recipient’s address.
To send a Registered Mail, the sender must visit the post office, fill out a registration form, pay the postage and registration fees, and get the item weighed. The cost of a registered post is calculated based on the weight of the package.
This service ensures that the mail is delivered only to the intended recipient or an authorised person. The sender also receives a delivery confirmation and can track the mail’s location until it reaches its destination.
Registered Post to Merge with Speed Post from September 1
As per the Postal Department’s directive, the decades-old Registered Mail service will be merged with the Speed Post service from September 1, 2025. The move is aimed at modernising and streamlining postal operations. Under this change, Speed Post will take over all key features of Registered Post, including secure delivery to the addressee, proof of delivery, and acknowledgement of receipt. Customers who earlier relied on Registered Post for secure and accountable mail can now get the same service through Speed Post.
