The long-awaited RTO flyover, connecting the Amravati Highway to the National Highway near Maharashtra’s Nagpur University area, will finally open for traffic on August 31. The Public Works Department (PWD) has set the date after completing the final stages of construction. However, the underpass below the flyover will take some more time before it becomes operational.
The ₹384-crore flyover project aims to ease traffic congestion between the RTO and University area, especially during peak hours. Although the project was supposed to be completed in 2023, delays due to approval procedures and land-related issues pushed back the timeline. Work on the flyover began in 2022, following the approval granted in 2021.
PWD officials stated that the structural work of the flyover is complete, and finishing touches are being given, including lane marking, installation of street lights, and safety railings. Once open, it will provide seamless connectivity from Amravati Road to the University area and onwards towards the RTO, significantly reducing travel time.
Delays in Approval Affected Progress
The project, first proposed in 2021, faced delays in getting clearance from the railway department and other agencies due to the inclusion of a steel bridge section over the railway crossing. The final approval came after intervention from the then Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Underpass Work Still Pending
While the flyover will be ready for commuters from August 31, the road beneath it will remain closed for a few more weeks as work is still underway. Officials have confirmed that construction of the underpass approach road and related drainage work is ongoing, and will be completed in a later phase.
