Nagpur is going green — literally. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has set up “Tree Banks” in every zone, offering 20,000 saplings free of cost to residents as part of a city-wide green drive.
Launched at Shivajinagar Garden in Dharampeth Zone by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari, the initiative aligns with the Central Government’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0” and the Maharashtra Government’s “Harit Maharashtra, Samruddha Maharashtra” mission. The state’s target? Planting one crore trees — with NMC determined to play its part.
“If citizens nurture these saplings, this mission will truly succeed,” said Dr. Chaudhari, after planting a tree alongside Additional Commissioner Vaishnavi B. and leaving a symbolic thumbprint on a commemorative board.
The Tree Banks are stocked with Sheesham, Mango, Amla, Bakul, Banyan, Ashoka, Neem, Kadamba, Jamun, Chikoo, Peepal, Arjun, and more. Citizens can collect them daily from 7–10 a.m. and 4–7 p.m. at designated gardens across all 10 zones. NMC will record each distribution to ensure care and follow-up.
The drive runs until September 30, 2025, with environmentalists hailing it as a hands-on way to involve citizens in climate action. “It’s not just about planting trees; it’s about planting responsibility,” said Green Vigil Foundation founder Kaustubh Chatterjee.
With monsoon moisture in the soil, NMC hopes the timing will ensure high survival rates — and help create a greener, cooler Nagpur for the future.
