Even in the darkest moments of grief, humanity can shine its brightest — and the Vairagade family from Seminary Hills, Nagpur, has proved it. On August 12, coinciding with Organ Donation Day, 62-year-old Ashok Vairagade was declared brain-dead. At this heart-wrenching moment, his wife Kamal and daughter Sneha took a life-changing decision — to donate his organs.
Ashok Vairagade had collapsed suddenly while climbing the stairs at home. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Ramdaspeth due to his critical condition. Despite all efforts, doctors confirmed he was brain-dead.
Hospital coordinator Shubhangi Pokale explained the organ donation process to the family. Having already learned about it through newspapers and radio, Kamal and Sneha decided to keep Ashok “alive” through his organs. The decision was immediately conveyed to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC). Under the guidance of Dr. Sanjay Kolte (Chairman) and Dr. Rahul Saxena (Secretary), coordinator Dinesh Mandpe facilitated the allocation of organs to patients on the waiting list.
Both kidneys and corneas were donated — one kidney to a 40-year-old man and the other to a 39-year-old man. The corneas were given to the eye bank at Lata Mangeshkar Hospital, restoring sight to two visually impaired individuals.
In one of life’s most painful moments, the Vairagade family chose compassion over despair — turning their personal loss into a beacon of hope for four other families.
