In a cultural first for the city, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will inaugurate Kalakar Katta — an open-air art gallery at the Government College of Art and Design (Chitrakala Mahavidyalay) — on Friday, August 15, at 10:30 AM. The initiative is part of the Central and State Governments’ Har Ghar Tiranga 2025 campaign and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.
The inauguration will be led by Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari, Municipal Commissioner, in the presence of Dr. Kishor Ingle, Director of Art, Government of Maharashtra, and Dr. Vishwanath Sable, Dean of the college. Students, faculty, and art lovers from across Nagpur are expected to attend.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is a monumental 30×4 feet mural painted by college students as a tribute to India’s freedom fighters and post-independence achievers in fields such as agriculture, science, literature, art, sports, economy, and culture. Titled Bharatachi Yashogatha (India’s Glorious Journey), the murals also highlight Nagpur’s distinct role in the nation’s story.
The project took several days of collaborative work by selected students and special committees, aiming to instil pride and foster cultural appreciation. The exhibition will be permanently managed by the Government College of Art and Design, allowing citizens to engage with the artworks year-round.
The concept for Kalakar Katta was envisioned and developed with the contribution of Mr. Abhijeet Maundekar, an alumnus of the college.
Nagpur citizens are invited to witness this creative Independence Day tribute — a vibrant celebration of history, heritage, and art.
