The growing problem of stray dogs in the city has prompted the administration to initiate concrete measures at the directive of the Bombay High Court, Nagpur Bench. During a recent hearing on a public interest litigation, the Court observed that concerned departments were not fully complying with its earlier orders. Expressing displeasure, the Court directed the authorities to convene a coordination meeting to frame effective action plans.
In line with the Court’s instructions, a crucial coordination meeting was held on Saturday at Police Bhavan under the chairmanship of Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravindrakumar Singhal. Senior officials from Nagpur Police, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the District Collector’s office, and the Animal Husbandry Department were present.
Animal welfare organizations, NGOs working for animal protection, dog lovers, and concerned citizens also participated, providing their suggestions and feedback to help formulate a practical strategy for controlling the stray dog population in Nagpur.
While animal welfare groups reaffirmed their commitment to working as per the Court’s directives, they also highlighted the challenges faced on the ground. They sought assistance from the police administration to overcome operational difficulties in managing stray dog-related issues effectively.
