The menace of stray dogs continues to instil fear among residents of Nagpur city. As per the data released by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), from April 2024 to July 2025, as many as 11,873 citizens have been bitten by stray dogs—averaging 26 cases every single day.
Most of the victims include children and senior citizens, who are highly vulnerable to such attacks. In July 2025 alone, 739 incidents of dog bites were recorded. Earlier in June, 899 cases were reported. The data also shows that between April 2024 and March 2025, nearly 9,398 people fell victim to stray dog attacks.
Protest and Debate
The situation has sparked outrage among social organizations and NGOs, many of whom have criticized the administration for failing to control the growing stray population. Animal welfare activists, however, have come out in defense of stray dogs, emphasizing sterilization and vaccination instead of mass culling.
Several areas of Nagpur have reported incidents of dog packs attacking passersby. Residents have complained of repeated attacks near schools, colonies, and market areas. Citizens are demanding urgent intervention to prevent further injuries.
