Mumbai: The historic sword of Shrimant Raje Raghuji Bhonsle arrived in Mumbai from London on Monday, August 18, receiving a ceremonial welcome from the Maharashtra government at the Mumbai International Airport. The rare weapon, acquired at a London auction, will be formally unveiled later in the evening by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Unlike most medieval Maratha arms, which were usually plain and bore no marks of their owners, this sword is unique. It carries ornate craftsmanship along with the name of Raghuji Bhonsle, and its European-made blade highlights the thriving international arms trade of 18th-century India.
Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, who officially received the sword in London, brought it to Mumbai and formally handed it over at the airport. The Departments of Cultural Affairs, Archaeology and Museums, along with PL Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy, have organised the ‘Sena Saheb Subha Parakram Darshan’ ceremony at 6 p.m., where the sword will be exhibited and inaugurated. Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with Minister Ashish Shelar and several dignitaries, will attend. Shrimant Mudhoji Raje Bhonsle, a descendant of Raghuji Bhonsle, will also grace the occasion.
From August 19 to 25, an exhibition featuring the sword and showcasing details of 12 heritage forts will be held at the Art Gallery of PL Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy, Prabhadevi, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The exhibition will be open to the public free of charge.
