New Delhi: The BCCI Women’s Selection Committee on Tuesday announced India’s squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup 2025, naming Harmanpreet Kaur as captain and Smriti Mandhana as vice-captain. The major talking point was the omission of Shafali Verma, widely regarded as one of India’s most explosive white-ball batters, from the 15-member squad.
The tournament, set to be held in India from September 30, gives Harmanpreet’s side a golden opportunity to chase a maiden World Cup title in front of home fans. India begin their campaign against Sri Lanka. The closest the women’s team came to the trophy was in 2017, when Mithali Raj’s side reached the final at Lord’s but lost to England in a dramatic finish.
Along with the World Cup squad, chief selector Neetu David and captain Harmanpreet also announced the team for the upcoming series against Australia.
“Personally, this tournament is very important for me. A home World Cup is special for every player. I have a lot of experience batting at No.4, and I just want to contribute to the team,” Harmanpreet told reporters.
