Nagpur: Tension gripped the area outside Nagpur Railway Station on Tuesday after a man attempted self-immolation during an anti-encroachment drive by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Swift action by police personnel, however, saved his life.
The NMC team was clearing unauthorized tea and paan stalls near the railway station when one stall owner, opposing the action, poured inflammable material on himself and tried to set himself ablaze. Policemen from Headquarters, deployed for security during the drive, immediately intervened and stopped him.
Thanks to their quick response, a major tragedy was averted. The man was taken into custody and handed over to the local police station for further legal action.
The incident led to brief unrest in the locality, but the situation was soon brought under control by police.
NMC has been conducting regular encroachment removal drives across Nagpur to free public spaces. To prevent such incidents, the civic body and police are maintaining extra vigilance.
NMC Commissioner also lauded constable Pankaj Ramteke for his alertness and bravery in saving the man’s life.
