In a significant move to tackle the growing urban pressure and unplanned expansion of Nagpur, the Maharashtra government has approved the ambitious “New Nagpur” project. Modeled on the Navi Mumbai concept, which was developed to ease the burden on Mumbai, this project envisions the creation of a modern satellite city for Nagpur. The decision was taken during the Infrastructure Development Committee meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
What is the ‘New Nagpur’ Concept?
The plan involves the development of a well-planned, modern satellite township in the Nagpur Metropolitan Region. It will include a third (peripheral) ring road, a state-of-the-art truck terminal, logistics hubs, industrial parks, and IT hubs. The goal is to transform Nagpur into a smart, sustainable, and green city, ready to meet future urban and industrial demands.
Areas Covered Under the Project
The “New Nagpur” plan will encompass tehsils such as Nagpur Rural, Kamptee, Hingna, Parseoni, Mouda, Saoner, Umred, and Kalmeshwar. Recently, under the Draft Development Plan (DP), new regions like Hudkeshwar and Narsala have also been included. However, areas like Bharatwada, Punapur, Pardi, and Bhandewadi have been excluded from the project.
148 km Long Third Ring Road
The centerpiece of the project will be a 148-kilometer-long third ring road, for which around 880 hectares of land across 36 villages will be acquired. This road will pass through Butibori MIDC, Hingna Industrial Area, MIHAN, Kalmeshwar, Gondkhairi, Kamptee, Parseoni, Mouda, Umred, Hudkeshwar, and Narsala belts. It will also connect with major national highways NH-44, NH-53, and NH-47, enhancing Nagpur’s role as a major industrial and logistics hub.
State-of-the-Art Truck Terminal
A modern truck terminal will be developed on the city’s outskirts. It will feature large-scale parking facilities, loading-unloading zones, warehouses, cold storage units, repair and service stations, and rest areas for drivers. This will significantly reduce inner-city traffic congestion and pollution.
Future Prospects
Experts believe that “New Nagpur” is not just about expansion but a model for planned, smart urban development. The project is expected to ease the growing burden on the old city while simultaneously creating new opportunities for employment, industry, and economic growth.
