Nagpur: The Travel Association of Nagpur on Wednesday raised concerns over the city administration’s recent decision to bar private travel buses from entering city limits, arguing that the move would inconvenience passengers rather than ease traffic woes.
At a press conference, Association President Baba Daware urged the authorities to provide designated parking areas for private buses within the city. “We have been demanding parking allotment since 2001 — 31 years now. If MSRTC buses are allotted space, why not us? Mark proper locations and charge fees if necessary,” Daware said.
Treasurer Mahendra Luley echoed the sentiment, stating, “This restriction on pick-up and drop-off points will only create difficulties for travelers. Our only appeal is that suitable parking space be allotted to private operators as well.”
The Association further alleged that the Home Department, as early as 2002, had directed the allocation of land for private bus terminals, and a 2008 circular under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Act also mandated parking facilities at convenient spots. However, land identified at Jagnade Square for this purpose was later diverted for constructing a hotel and hospital, they claimed.
The protest comes after the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) issued an order on August 12, restricting private buses from picking up or dropping off passengers within city areas to reduce congestion. Association Secretary Sanjay Mohta was also present during the briefing.
