Nagpur: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli and several others in the 2007 murder case of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar. The apex court said the specific bail conditions would be imposed by the trial court, following which Gawli will walk free from Nagpur Central Jail.
Sentenced to life imprisonment in 2012, the former underworld don turned politician marked his first conviction in the corporator’s killing despite facing multiple criminal cases earlier. Known as “Daddy” in Mumbai’s Dagdi Chawl, Gawli later founded the Akhil Bharatiya Sena and entered electoral politics.
During his jail term, Gawli largely kept a low profile. Senior officials confirmed that he was granted 14 to 15 paroles and furloughs, while maintaining discipline and engaging in assigned prison work.
In 2018, Gawli made an unusual headline for topping an exam on Gandhian thoughts, scoring 74 out of 80 marks. The test, conducted by NGOs Sahyog Trust, Sarvodaya Ashram, and Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal, saw participation from 160 inmates. Gawli’s performance earned him a certificate and Khadi clothes as recognition.
His release on bail now revives public interest in his remarkable journey from dreaded don to Gandhi exam topper and disciplined prisoner.
