The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) health department has intensified preventive measures to control the spread of dengue, malaria, and chikungunya during the Ganesh festival. Officials confirmed that larvae were detected at 44,833 locations across the city during inspections.
During the rainy season, stagnant water collected in different parts of houses, terraces, coolers, flowerpots, and vacant plots becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, leading to an increased risk of infection. To tackle this, the health department conducted pre-emptive surveys and larval inspections in containers. Out of over 13 lakh containers checked, more than 44,000 were found positive for larvae.
The highest number of cases were reported in Dhantoli zone, with 7,896 locations showing larval presence. Other major affected areas include Nehru Nagar (4,955), Gandhibagh (4,959), and Lakshmi Nagar (6,098). Immediate action plans and public health checks have been launched in these localities, with priority given to vector-control measures and continuous monitoring.
According to Dr. Deepak Selokar, NMC Health Officer, awareness drives, sanitation measures, and source reduction activities are being carried out. Despite preventive steps, the city has already reported 21 confirmed cases of chikungunya since the beginning of August.
