Nagpur- Several organisations representing the Other Backward Classes (OBC) have come together under the banner “Save Reservation” to oppose the demand for granting Maratha community reservation from the OBC quota.
In a meeting held on Thursday, the groups declared that they would launch a chain hunger strike at Constitution Square from August 30. They also warned of a larger agitation in Mumbai if the government, under pressure, takes a decision that compromises the existing OBC reservation framework.
Presiding over the meeting, Dr. Babanrao Taywade, National President of the OBC Federation, said that Maratha leader Manoj Jarange Patil is attempting to pressurise the government by staging a fast at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan starting August 29. Patil is demanding that the Maratha community be included in the OBC category to avail reservation benefits.
However, the OBC Federation has firmly rejected this demand, stressing that the Maratha community should be granted a separate quota and not accommodated within the existing OBC reservation.
Office-bearers of OBC organisations from Buldhana, Amravati, Akola, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli districts attended the meeting. The proceedings were conducted by Sharad Wankhede, while Sachin Rajurkar delivered the introductory remarks.
