A major disruption occurred at Ajni Railway Station, one of the most important stations in the Nagpur division of Central Railway, on Sunday evening when a sudden power failure plunged the entire premises into darkness. The blackout, which lasted for nearly an hour, caused panic among passengers, especially since it coincided with the scheduled departure of the Pune–Nagpur Humsafar Express.
The outage, which began around 6:30 PM, left waiting passengers in pitch darkness. With no lights functioning on the platforms, foot overbridge, or waiting areas, the risk of accidents increased significantly. Many passengers complained of extreme inconvenience, confusion, and even minor injuries due to the lack of visibility.
Railway sources revealed that the blackout occurred due to a fault in the power supply system. With platform announcements and lighting systems down, crowd management became difficult. Security concerns were heightened as passengers were left vulnerable in the unlit environment. Officials admitted that such lapses pose a serious threat to passenger safety.
Hundreds of commuters, including women, children, and senior citizens, were left stranded in discomfort. Many were preparing to board the Humsafar Express, which was delayed due to the crisis. The sudden failure also sparked anger among passengers, who questioned the preparedness of railway authorities in handling emergencies.
Though power was restored after nearly an hour, the incident highlighted the urgent need for robust backup systems at Ajni, which handles heavy daily footfall. This is not the first time passengers at Ajni have faced difficulties due to infrastructural lapses, and commuters demanded immediate corrective action from railway administration to prevent such occurrences in the future.
