Local legislators, leaders, and environmental activists in Kalmeshwar tehsil are opposing the proposed Walni coal mine project. To highlight their concerns, a large citizen’s meeting has been scheduled for September 10.
The proposed mine seeks clearance for 1562 hectares of land. According to reports, most of this area falls under forest land, which is ecologically sensitive. Opponents argue that the mine would endanger biodiversity, displace villages, and cause large-scale environmental damage.
Locals fear that the coal mine project would lead to deforestation, pollution, and disruption of water resources. They have urged authorities to cancel the project and protect the area’s ecological balance.
As per the National Mineral Policy 2019, public hearings are mandatory before granting mining leases. Activists and social workers have demanded that the government prioritize people’s opinions and conduct a transparent process. They stressed that before handing over the mining lease to Adani Cement Limited, the administration must hold a public consultation.
Sameer Mehre, MLA from Hingna Constituency: “People are worried about losing their land and livelihood. The project should be scrapped in the interest of locals and the environment.”
