With the old diesel buses of the municipal transport depot now phased out, electric buses are being introduced. Under the state government’s Electric Vehicle Policy, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has deployed 250 e-buses for public transport. However, despite this initiative, the city bus service continues to operate at a heavy loss.
According to information, NMC incurs a daily loss of nearly ₹40 lakh in running these buses. While citizens have received improved transport facilities, the financial burden on the civic body has escalated.
The losses mainly stem from operational costs. To manage this deficit, consultants were appointed, but the service remains loss-making. Officials admit that mismanagement and improper utilization of funds collected from taxes are worsening the situation.
Currently, Nagpur has 250 e-buses under its fleet. Various project-based e-buses are operating under different arrangements. This includes 230 e-buses under the FAME scheme, 12 e-buses under another project, and 20 more buses under a separate plan.
To streamline the service, NMC has planned for new routes, better frequency, and the introduction of additional e-buses in the coming months.
