Jaripatka Police have arrested a 55-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh who looted ₹8.12 lakh by breaking open a State Bank of India ATM in Nagpur with a gas cutter. The arrest came after investigators scanned nearly 350 CCTV footages across the city.
The accused has been identified as Khursheed Ahmed Nisar Ahmed, a resident of Nizamuddin Colony, Yashodharanagar, and a native of Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He confessed to the crime during questioning and revealed that he had four accomplices who are currently on the run.
The incident occurred on September 4 at 2.26 am, when the gang forced entry into the ATM kiosk and fled with cash. The theft was first noticed by ATM channel supervisor Prashant Pandey, who alerted branch manager Asim Akhtar Khalik Ansari (43). A case was immediately registered at Jaripatka Police Station.
Police said Khursheed is a habitual offender with more than 25 criminal cases registered against him in Maharashtra, including several in the Mumbai-Thane region. Investigators suspect he and his aides may have targeted other ATMs using similar techniques.
He was produced before court and remanded to police custody till September 14.
The operation was led by PI Arun Kshirsagar with support from officers Ashish Morkhede, Maruti Jangilwad, Amit Satpute, Pankaj Thakur, Manish Kokarde, Atul Shirbhate, Manish Meshram, Mangesh Donadkar, Pawan Kamarkar, Vikas Pathak, Anuj Thakur, Gangadhar Dade, Sunil Vishwakarma, Rahul Chavan, Pankaj Varkad, Rakesh Singh, Pramod Salodkar, Nitesh Nagpure, Nikhil Chaudhary, Suryakant Ingle, and others.
Police are now tracing the absconding associates and investigating Khursheed’s involvement in other ATM break-ins across the state.
