Nagpur: Continuous rainfall over the past few days has pushed water levels in Nagpur district’s major reservoirs close to maximum capacity, prompting authorities to prepare for controlled water releases to manage excess inflow.
Key dams such as Totladoh, Navegaon Khairy, Khindsi, Wadgaon and Nand are nearly full, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Totladoh, a crucial source of water for Nagpur, has reached 99.53% of its capacity. Navegaon Khairy in Parseoni taluka is holding 94.71% water stock, Khindsi is at 94.89%, Wadgaon at 94.14%, while Nand has touched 98.15%.
Experts warned that continued downpours may trigger flood-like conditions in low-lying talukas if inflows persist. The administration has already issued alerts and may open dam gates in the coming days to ease pressure.
Totladoh dam, with a designed storage of 1,016.93 Million Cubic Metres (Mcum), recorded 1,012.13 Mcum of live storage on Tuesday. Navegaon Khairy, designed for 142 Mcum, currently holds 134.48 Mcum, while Khindsi has 97.74 Mcum against its full capacity of 106 Mcum.
Overall, the district’s 77 dams together recorded 98.11% live storage—nearly identical to levels seen at this time last year.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert as rainfall is expected to continue.
