Nagpur’s main railway station witnessed chaos on Tuesday evening as heavy rains once again triggered severe waterlogging at the West Gate. Passengers, already exhausted from their journeys, were forced to wade through knee-deep water while dragging their luggage. Trolleys proved of little use in the flooded stretch, and vehicles—including two-wheelers, cars, and auto-rickshaws—struggled to navigate the submerged road.
Although the station is currently under redevelopment, the sight of a broad concrete road drowned under water left passengers visibly frustrated. For many, the experience of arriving in or departing from the city’s busiest station turned into a test of endurance.
The problem, however, is far from new. Despite repeated assurances from railway officials that the issue has been raised with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), no concrete action has been seen on the ground.
Conditions inside the station were no better. Roof leaks were reported on platforms 2 and 3, where rainwater dripped directly onto the waiting area. Passengers were left with little choice but to hold their luggage aloft to avoid it getting drenched.
The episode yet again highlighted how a brief spell of rain is enough to expose the city’s fragile drainage system and inadequate infrastructure preparedness.
