Nagpur: A spell of intense rain on Tuesday evening threw life out of gear in Nagpur city, leaving several neighbourhoods submerged and traffic crawling late into the night. Starting around 6 pm, the downpour continued for hours, with the city recording 50.6 mm of rainfall by 8.30 pm. Dark clouds and thunder accompanied the showers, worsening the situation.
The heavy rain inundated several low-lying areas, including Shankar Nagar Square, Abhyankar Nagar Square, Medical Square, Manewada Square and Automotive Square. Water gushed into homes in parts of the city, while major roads remained choked with traffic jams, adding to commuters’ misery.
For the second consecutive day, Nagpur also woke up to misty conditions, poor visibility and high humidity. Although morning hours remained rain-free, the sticky weather added to citizens’ discomfort.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Nagpur and several Vidarbha districts, cautioning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms at isolated locations till Thursday. Officials said a cyclonic circulation over the region is expected to fuel moderate to heavy showers through next week as well.
Casualty and Flood Threats in Vidarbha
In Washim district, the downpour turned fatal when a 35-year-old man drowned in flash floods at Shirpur Jain. Meanwhile, heavy inflow has pushed several major projects in neighbouring districts to the brink.
At Buldhana’s Khadakpurna project, continuous rains led to overflow, forcing authorities to open all 19 gates by 50 cm on Tuesday evening. An alert has been issued to 33 villages situated along the riverbanks. Similarly, in Mehkar taluka, five gates of the Pen Takli project were lifted by 20 cm to discharge excess water.
Sant Chokhasagar project also reached full storage capacity with its reservoir touching 529 metres. All 19 gates were opened by 50 cm, releasing 1,326 cubic cm or 46,854 cubic feet cm of water into the river downstream.
Authorities have urged residents of flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as more rain is forecast in the coming days.
