Nagpur: Days before Navratri, a clash over modern promotions and traditional values has put Nagpur’s Garba celebrations under the spotlight. Two separate events faced objections from Bajrang Dal, resulting in one organiser issuing a public apology and another cancelling its programme altogether.
The first incident unfolded when a youth group released an Instagram reel promoting a “Dholida” Garba night at the open-air venue Halff Time. Bajrang Dal activists called the content objectionable and confronted the organisers. After talks, the youngsters apologised and even appeared in a “before-and-after” video later posted by the saffron outfit on its Instagram page.
Soon after, a second dispute emerged around the “Dakla Night” planned by Yashiv Garba at Dabo Club. Bajrang Dal objected to holding a religious event at a venue where alcohol is served. The matter reached Sonegaon police station, where organisers and Bajrang Dal representatives held several rounds of discussions on Wednesday. By evening, both sides agreed to cancel the programme scheduled for the next day.
The twin episodes have sparked a broader conversation among Nagpur’s youth and on social media. While many support safeguarding the cultural essence of Navratri, others criticise what they describe as moral policing. “Garba is meant to unite people through music and devotion, not create divisions,” said Falgun Manusmare, a regular at city Garba nights.
Cultural commentators observe that Navratri has always balanced devotion with changing times. This year, however, the friction between tradition and contemporary promotion is sharper than ever, leaving event organisers cautious as the nine-day festival approaches.
