The menace of stray dogs in Nagpur continues to grow at an alarming rate. Over the last four years, as many as 38,710 people have fallen victim to dog bites across the city’s streets, colonies, and neighborhoods.
According to data, between July 2021 and July 2025, government hospitals and clinics registered nearly 38,710 bite cases, with the actual number likely even higher since many incidents go unreported. In the same period, anti-rabies vaccines were administered to 56,997 dog bite victims, but despite treatments, the number of stray dogs continues to rise.
Th Nagpur Municipal Corporation admits it does not have an accurate record of the stray dog population. However, rough estimates suggest their numbers are swelling every year. After treatment, most captured dogs are released back into the same localities, raising serious concerns about public safety.
In 2024 alone, the city witnessed over 7,403 dog bite cases. From January to July 2025, around 4,043 new cases were reported, indicating the problem is far from under control. Even more worrying, 2,361 cases have already been recorded in the current year, with 1,668 of them among children.
Citizens are demanding a more effective and sustainable solution from authorities, including strict sterilization drives, better monitoring, and safer handling of the stray dog menace.
