Nagpur: The Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) squad of Crime Branch has arrested a repeat offender and seized 106 grams of mephedrone (MD) powder during a swift operation in Rana Pratap Nagar on Monday morning. The total haul, including a moped and a mobile phone, is valued at ₹6.2 lakh.
The action was carried out between 6.40 am and 8.40 am on September 29 near Kamgar Nagar, close to Subhash Nagar. The arrested accused, Chetan Munna Mahato (29) of Sleeper Colony, Subhash Nagar, already has three cases registered against him, including charges of murder and assault under Sections 302, 326 and 324 of the IPC.
Police have also booked Akbar Shaikh of Mumbai, who is currently absconding, and a manhunt is underway to trace him.
According to officials, the NDPS team noticed Mahato behaving suspiciously while patrolling the area. A search conducted in the presence of witnesses led to the recovery of the contraband. A fresh offence has been registered under Sections 8(c), 22(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act at Rana Pratap Nagar Police Station.
The operation underscores Nagpur Police’s ongoing crackdown on synthetic drug peddling, which has witnessed a sharp rise across the city in recent months. Investigators are now probing the supply network to identify additional links in the racket.
