Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of corruption reports in the country, with Pune topping the list among Indian cities, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
According to a media report, experts, however, warn that these figures should not be mistaken for stronger anti-corruption enforcement or lower corruption levels elsewhere. Instead, they point to Maharashtra’s active and aware citizenry, which is more willing to report corrupt practices compared to other regions where such complaints often go unreported.
Despite the high number of reports, the state currently lacks a fully functional system dedicated to combating corruption. Several agencies once tasked with the job have either been shut down or remain inactive. Consequently, the surge in reporting cannot be attributed to government initiatives or political will.
The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) continues to register cases, but conviction rates remain low. Many officials against whom suspension or disciplinary action has been recommended are still serving in their posts. Requests for investigation or permission to prosecute often get delayed, reflecting deep-rooted administrative and political hurdles.
Analysts believe the NCRB data underscores the vigilance of Maharashtra’s citizens rather than the success of institutional mechanisms against corruption.
