In a remarkable act of compassion and skill, doctors at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Bhandewadi Animal Shelter have saved the life of a stray dog suffering from a massive 3.5-kilogram tumor on its chest. The surgery, performed by Dr. Sunny Magar and his veterinary team, stands as one of the most challenging procedures undertaken at the shelter in recent years.
The dog, found wandering in critical condition, was rescued by the Dharampeth Zone’s dog-catching squad after residents reported its deteriorating health. Once admitted to the Bhandewadi shelter, medical examinations revealed a large tumor on the lateroventral side of its right chest — a growth so heavy it made walking nearly impossible. With the tumor posing an imminent threat to the animal’s life, an immediate surgical intervention was carried out.
Over several hours, Dr. Magar’s team successfully removed the 3.5 kg mass, ensuring minimal blood loss and a safe recovery. Post-surgery, the dog is now under careful observation and showing promising signs of recovery.
Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari, and supervision of Additional Commissioner Mrs. Vasumana Pant, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, and Chief Sanitation Officer Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, the Bhandewadi Animal Shelter has become a vital care center for injured and abandoned dogs.
From accident victims to those suffering from paralysis, tumors, and maggot wounds, the shelter offers not just treatment — but a second chance at life. For this brave stray, that chance came in the form of a scalpel, a skilled hand, and boundless compassion.
