Following the tragic deaths of several children linked to the consumption of toxic cough syrup, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an extensive investigation. The FDA has collected 12 cough syrup samples from various locations in the city and sent them for laboratory testing.
Additionally, the FDA has issued notices to two medicine vendors for selling prescription drugs without authorization. Early findings suggest that the “Coldrif” cough syrup contained diethylene glycol (DEG), a highly toxic substance. This compound is extremely dangerous, especially for children, as it can lead to kidney failure, brain swelling, and death.
So far, the contaminated syrup has claimed the lives of 22 children. Taking the matter seriously, the Maharashtra FDA issued an urgent alert on Sunday, advising an immediate halt to the sale and use of cough syrups from the “SR-93” batch of “Coldrif.”
