In a pioneering move for urban mobility, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has approved the ‘Healthy Streets Neighbourhood Network’ for the Dharampeth–Shankar Nagar zone — the city’s first comprehensive street redevelopment project focused on safety, accessibility, and environmental balance.
Designed by Prasanna Desai Architects, Pune, the plan spans 11 kilometres from Jhansi Rani Square to Ambazari Lake, integrating eight key roads with Right of Way (RoW) widths between 18 to 30 metres. The main 9.5-km corridor links Jhansi Rani Square to Ambazari Lake through Shankar Nagar and Ram Nagar, with connecting roads adding another 1.5 km.
The redesign includes continuous footpaths, dedicated cycling zones, organized parking, junction improvements, and stormwater drainage. Major intersections like Shankar Nagar Chowk, Bajaj Nagar Chowk, and Ram Nagar Chowk will be reshaped to reduce traffic conflict and enhance pedestrian safety.
Called a “Healthy Street”, the network shifts the focus from vehicle speed to human comfort — ensuring shaded sidewalks, clear cycling lanes, and safer crossings. The project aims to cut noise, pollution, and accident risks while encouraging walking and cycling in dense residential and institutional areas.
Environmental upgrades include tree-lined pathways, rainwater trenches, and green buffers, transforming the corridor into a climate-resilient urban zone. For institutions like VNIT, LAD College, and the Institute of Engineers, the project promises smoother access and safer student mobility.
Once completed, the Healthy Streets Network will stand as a model for inclusive, sustainable, and community-driven urban design, redefining Nagpur’s roads as vibrant public spaces rather than mere traffic corridors.
