Nagpur: Days of tension in the MIHAN locality came to an end on Saturday after forest officials successfully captured a leopard that had been roaming near residential and institutional zones, sparking fear among locals and employees.
The rescue operation, conducted by the Forest Department’s Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) team under the supervision of Range Forest Officer (RFO) Pramod Wade from Butibori, had been underway since Friday. A bait was used to lure the animal, and after nearly 24 hours of surveillance, the male leopard was safely trapped on Saturday morning.
“The animal was not injured during the operation and has been released into a safe forest area, far from human habitation,” RFO Wade confirmed.
Officials also reported spotting a female leopard with three cubs, believed to be around two to three months old, in the same vicinity. “The mother and her cubs will not be captured but will remain under close observation to ensure their safety,” Wade added.
The captured leopard was found near the premises of IIM Nagpur, where overgrown grass and poor lighting offered suitable cover. Authorities suspect the animal may have been drawn to the area by stray dogs frequently fed by students.
In response, the Forest Department has directed IIM Nagpur and nearby establishments to clear tall vegetation, improve lighting around campuses, and restrict outdoor movement after dark to avoid future wildlife encounters.
