In a major green initiative, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has signed an MoU with Mumbai-based NGO Green Yatra to develop a 70-acre Biodiversity Park near Gorewada Road, where over 10,000 saplings have already been planted. The project aims to create a living classroom and natural biodiversity hub, strengthening Nagpur’s ecological and recreational landscape.
Work has begun on barbed wire fencing across 2,100 meters at a cost of ₹12.7 lakh, marking the first physical phase of development. The fencing will secure the site from encroachment and highlight NMC’s effort to protect its green assets.
Located near the Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park and the Gorewada Reservoir, the park will serve as an ecological extension of the city’s northern green belt. Under the MoU, Green Yatra will handle complete ecological planning, including plantations, butterfly gardens, medicinal herb zones, groundwater recharge systems, and nature trails for students and citizens.
Experts say the area lies within a wildlife buffer zone connecting the Pench, Bor, and Nagzira forest corridors, giving it significant ecological importance. Once completed, the park will aid carbon absorption, groundwater recharge, and biodiversity conservation, while offering citizens a serene nature retreat.
“The Gorewada Biodiversity Park is not just another plantation project — it’s an ecosystem in the making,” said Amol Chorpagar, NMC Garden Superintendent. The initiative complements efforts like the deconcretisation of 3,400 trees, marking a forward step toward sustainable and green urban growth.
