Low-income families in Nagpur to receive ₹2.5 lakh subsidy
In a major step toward achieving the government’s vision of “Housing for All,” the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has announced an ambitious plan to construct 30,000 affordable homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) 2.0. The initiative aims to provide thousands of working-class families in Nagpur with a permanent roof over their heads — even if they do not own land.
Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive a ₹2.5 lakh subsidy from the government to purchase or build a home. The project primarily targets the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low-Income Groups (LIG) — citizens who often live in rented rooms or temporary shelters despite being employed full-time in the city.
A key feature of the initiative is its inclusive approach. Land ownership will not be a prerequisite for applicants. The NMRDA will assist those without land by either identifying suitable plots or allotting homes in its upcoming layouts.
Speaking about the project, Sachin Dhole, Additional Commissioner, NMRDA, said: “Our mission is simple — no family in Nagpur should be left without a safe and permanent home. Whether someone owns land or not, we will stand with them to make their dream of home ownership a reality.”
The homes developed under this scheme will include essential amenities such as water supply, electricity, internal roads, and drainage. Officials have confirmed that the project sites will be located in well-connected areas, close to transportation hubs and employment zones, ensuring convenience for future residents.
The application process is expected to begin soon, once the official guidelines are finalized. Applicants must meet the prescribed income criteria and declare that they do not own a pucca house anywhere in the country.
With Nagpur’s population rapidly expanding and housing affordability on the decline, this project is being viewed as a significant milestone in the city’s urban development journey.
