A total of 353 complaints were filed against police personnel in Nagpur district between 2022 and September 2025, but only five officers were found guilty, according to information obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act by activist Abhay Kolarkar.
The RTI data reveals that out of the total complaints, 254 cases were forwarded to the State Government for further action, while the remaining were closed after departmental inquiries or clarifications. Despite being found guilty, action against the five erring officers is still pending with the State Government, indicating a slow disciplinary process.
A year-wise breakup shows that 126 complaints were registered in 2022, 60 in 2023, 95 in 2024, and 72 between January and September 2025. Of these, only a handful were found to have merit, but no final decisions or punishments have been executed.
The RTI also sheds light on the nature of allegations, which include negligence, misuse of power, obstruction in investigation, and dereliction of duty. However, no complaints were reported under serious offences such as assault, rape, illegal arrest, or extortion. The report also notes that no information was provided regarding financial losses or compensation linked to police misconduct.
Interestingly, while four police personnel were found guilty in 2023 and one in 2024, no officers were held accountable in 2022 or in 2025 (till September).
Activist Abhay Kolarkar said the data exposes gaps in police accountability and the lack of prompt action. “Most cases either get buried in procedural delays or await state-level approval, reflecting how disciplinary systems within the police remain weak,” he said.
