Nagpur Railway Station’s major redevelopment project is set to move into a significant phase, with Platform No. 2expected to be closed for nearly 55 days to facilitate construction work. The decision comes as foundational upgrades at Platform No. 5 near completion, following earlier shutdowns of Platforms 7 and 5 for similar redevelopment activities.
Train Diversions, Temporary Cancellations Proposed
Speaking to Lokmat Times, Aman Mittal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Central Railway (Nagpur Division), confirmed that a proposal outlining train diversions, temporary cancellations, and operational adjustments has already been sent to the headquarters for approval.
“Platforms 2 and 3 witness the highest passenger footfall and accommodate several long-rake trains,” Mittal said. He noted that the closure of Platform No. 2 is a crucial step in the redevelopment plan, and during this period, long-rake trains may be redirected to Platforms 6 or 8 until work is completed. The shutdown will begin once the proposal receives the final nod.
Platform 3 to Remain Operational; Platform 1 Work to Follow
Despite the temporary closure of Platform No. 2, Platform No. 3 will remain functional for boarding and deboarding passengers. After work on Platform No. 2 concludes, the redevelopment of Platform No. 1 is expected to begin.
Mittal clarified that Platform No. 1 will not be entirely closed; instead, work will be executed in blocks to ensure minimum inconvenience to commuters.
Passenger Challenges Likely Despite Precautions
Although the Nagpur Division is attempting to minimize disruption, officials acknowledge that managing passenger movement during this phase may be challenging. Diverting long-rake trains to shorter platforms could lead to logistical issues and crowding.
Even under regular circumstances, dropping or receiving passengers at Nagpur Railway Station has become increasingly difficult. With the upcoming construction phase, commuters may face additional inconvenience until the redevelopment project progresses to its next stage.
