The Supreme Court has stepped in to examine a plea demanding 33 percent reservation for women lawyers in the upcoming elections of the High Court Bar Association, Nagpur, taking serious note of the issue and seeking replies from all concerned parties.
During the recent hearing, a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notices to the Bar Association and other respondents, directing them to submit their responses by November 21.
The petition has been filed through a Special Leave Petition (SLP) by advocate Preeti Rane, who had earlier approached the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court with the same demand. On November 6, the High Court rejected her plea for implementation of reservation in the forthcoming Bar Association elections, prompting her to move the Supreme Court.
The executive committee of the High Court Bar Association consists of a President, two Vice Presidents, Secretary, Joint Secretary, Librarian, Treasurer, and nine Executive Members. The election schedule has already been declared, with voting slated for December 12, and the results to be announced the same day.
