A dramatic accident at the Nagpur City Regional Transport Office (RTO) on Wednesday morning created panic among licence applicants after a car overturned during a permanent driving licence test.
The incident occurred when an applicant arrived with his vehicle (MH 31 FE 9885) to undertake the mandatory driving trial. While crossing a small bridge on the test track, the driver reportedly lost control, causing the car to slip off the edge, plunge downward, and overturn inside the premises.
Despite the frightening nature of the mishap, both the applicant and his son—who was seated beside him—escaped without injuries. RTO officers, staff, and other candidates witnessed the incident in shock and immediately rushed to rescue the duo from the overturned vehicle.
In an unusual yet impressive display of teamwork, officials and visitors manually lifted and straightened the car after a senior inspector suggested attempting it without a crane.
The accident has raised concerns regarding safety checks and preparedness during driving trials. Deputy Regional Transport Officer Manoj Otari stressed the importance of proper training, saying:
“Learners should undergo adequate training through certified driving schools. Only once they are fully confident should they appear for the permanent licence test. Driving schools also provide dual-control vehicles, which make trials safer. Everyone must prioritise safe driving practices.”
