On the occasion of National Cancer Awareness Day, a ‘Cancer Awareness’ programme was organised at the Mahila Mahavidyalay by the Swasthya¬vardhini Health Club. The event received an enthusiastic response from the students.
The chief speaker, Devyani Gharote, Head of Snehanchal Palliative Care Centre, said that the consumption of gutkha and tobacco, as well as smoking bidis and cigarettes, significantly increases the chances of getting cancer. She mentioned that breast cancer and cervical cancer are more commonly observed among women. She further stated that if symptoms are detected early and medical advice is taken promptly, cancer can be treated and controlled through various available treatments. She also appealed to the audience to contact the Snehanchal Centre if they come across cancer patients in their surroundings.
In his presidential speech, the Principal of the college, Dr. Rashtrapal Ganveer, stated that drinking tea in plastic bags and using plastic utensils for food can also cause cancer. He added that the increasing use of chemical substances in fruits and vegetables is contributing to rising cancer cases.
The programme was organised by Health Committee members Dr. Kshama Chavan and Dr. Smita Giri, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Bharti Pendam. A large number of faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students were present at the event.
