Calling the current waste-management system at Bhandewadi “unsatisfactory and poorly executed,” Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Commissioner and Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari has strongly reprimanded officials for lapses in daily operations. He warned that continued negligence in managing the city’s solid waste will attract strict penalties, signalling that the civic administration will no longer tolerate inefficiency at the city’s largest waste-processing hub.
The Bhandewadi Integrated Solid Waste Project currently receives nearly 800 tonnes of garbage every day, but its processing method and workflow have failed to meet expected standards. During a field visit, Dr. Chaudhari expressed displeasure over the overall functioning and directed officers to immediately correct the operational shortcomings.
The Commissioner also conducted an inspection of the new solid waste processing centre being developed across 10 acres of the Bhandewadi dumping yard. With construction nearing completion, he instructed officials to finish all remaining work within 15 days and begin a dry run soon after. Senior NMC officials, including Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, Superintending Engineer Dr. Shweta Banerjee, Assistant Commissioner Vikas Raibole, and Executive Engineer Rajesh Dufare, accompanied him.
The new facility, operated by Bhumi Green Pvt. Ltd. of Pune, is designed to process 500 tonnes of waste daily, converting it into organic compost and Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF). Together with the existing Susbidy operations, the city aims to handle up to 1,300 tonnes of waste every day.
Dr. Chaudhari reviewed essential utilities such as the power supply, drinking water connections and the approach road. He directed that the accumulated waste around the plant be shifted immediately to clear the operational area.
The Commissioner reiterated that compliance with instructions is mandatory and that the Bhandewadi project must be brought up to scientific, efficient standards without delay.
