Nagpur residents are likely to get relief as the Municipal Corporation is set to keep property tax rates unchanged for the 2026–27 financial year.
Officials say the Property Tax Department has not submitted any proposal to increase taxes, even though the deadline for doing so is February 20. Normally, a tax hike needs approval from the General Body, but since the city has been under administrative rule for three years, the Municipal Commissioner holds the authority to decide.
The last property tax hike was in 2015, and rates have remained the same for over a decade. With municipal elections due next year, sources say the administration has avoided proposing an increase, giving financial relief to homeowners and businesses.
In past years too, tax hikes were avoided—either rejected by the General Body or skipped during election periods.
For 2025–26, the revenue target is ₹400 crore, but officials admit that staff shortages and employees being busy with election duties may make it difficult to meet this target.
The corporation is allowed to revise property tax annually and collects 11 types of general taxes, such as general tax, sewage, sanitation, water, fire safety, tree, and education tax, along with a 2% state education tax.
