The State Election Commission of Maharashtra has formally announced the election programme for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) as part of the statewide civic polls for 29 municipal corporations in 2025–26. The notification, issued on December 15, 2025, marks a decisive step towards restoring an elected civic body in Nagpur after years of administrator rule.
The elections will be conducted under Articles 243-K and 243-ZA of the Constitution, in line with Supreme Court directions mandating completion of all pending local body elections in Maharashtra by January 31, 2026, subject to final judicial outcomes. In Nagpur, key preparatory steps—including ward formation, reservation and publication of final ward-wise voter lists—have already been completed, clearing the way for the election process.
As per the schedule, the election notification will be published on December 18, 2025. Nomination papers can be filed from December 23 to December 29, with scrutiny on December 31. The final list of candidates will be declared on January 3, 2026, after the withdrawal deadline of January 2.
Polling is scheduled for January 15, 2026, from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm, while counting and result declaration will begin on January 16. The results are expected to be notified in the government gazette by January 19.
The Commission has clarified that nominations will be accepted only through the offline process. For reserved wards, candidates must submit caste certificates, with caste validity allowed within six months of election, failing which the election will be cancelled retrospectively.
With the announcement of the programme, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force across the NMC limits. The responsibility for smooth conduct of the elections now rests with the Nagpur Municipal Commissioner.
The polls are being keenly watched as they will shape Nagpur’s civic leadership amid growing urban governance challenges.
