With the Nagpur Municipal Corporation elections being held after an eight-year gap, political activity has intensified across parties. Aspirants are keen to contest on the symbols of national parties, seeing the civic body as a key political stepping stone. However, seasoned workers warn that municipal politics demands constant public engagement, and corporators disconnected from citizens rarely survive long.
The BJP is targeting an increase from 108 to nearly 120 seats, but the push by party MLAs to field loyalists has sparked unease. Senior leaders with experience in civic administration fear being sidelined, raising concerns that inexperienced candidates, even if elected, may struggle to deliver results—potentially hurting the party’s image.
The Congress, meanwhile, is focusing on winnability. The party is considering candidates who narrowly lost last time and influential Independents. Both BJP and Congress are also grappling with alliance-related tensions, with seat-sharing talks still inconclusive just days before nominations, increasing the likelihood of fractured contests.
At the grassroots, workers across parties caution against giving tickets to builders and businessmen with little public connect. They demand preference for leaders who consistently stood with citizens during crises and remained accessible beyond election season.
