Nagpur Police booked 147 motorists for drunk driving during an intensive traffic enforcement drive carried out on New Year’s Eve, as the city ushered in 2026 with large-scale celebrations. The action was taken under Operation U-Turn, led by DCP Traffic Lohit Matani, with the focus on preventing accidents and maintaining public safety amid late-night revelry.
Thousands of people stepped out to celebrate the occasion, with top hotels, restaurants and clubs across the city witnessing packed venues and high-energy festivities. In the wake of recent violent incidents reported at some city clubs, police deployed additional security personnel at entertainment hubs and other sensitive locations.
While the festive spirit dominated the streets, police teams maintained strict vigilance. Barricades were installed at several major intersections, and random vehicle checks were conducted using breath analysers to identify intoxicated drivers. Youths were seen cruising along prominent roads, exchanging New Year greetings, even as traffic police regulated movement to avoid congestion and disturbances.
Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal personally monitored the situation and interacted with citizens on the streets, appealing for responsible celebrations and adherence to the law.
Despite heavy vehicular movement and celebrations continuing well into the night, the city did not report any major road accidents, reflecting the effectiveness of the New Year’s Eve traffic crackdown and coordinated policing efforts across Nagpur.
