Nagpur-born IPS officer Nilambari Vijay Jagdale has been appointed as the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police, marking a significant milestone in her distinguished policing career. She assumed charge of her new post on the first day of the New Year.
Punjab, a sensitive border state, faces complex challenges including terrorism, drug trafficking, gun culture and security threats from neighbouring Pakistan. In this context, Jagdale’s appointment is being viewed as a decisive and confidence-inspiring move by the Punjab government.
Jagdale has a deep connection with Nagpur. Born and raised in Giripeth, she completed her entire education in the city. She studied at CP & Berar School, completed her Class 12 from Shivaji College, and later earned an engineering degree in electronics from VNIT.
After briefly working with a multinational company in Indore, she left her job to prepare for the UPSC examination. She joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 2008 and opted for the Punjab cadre. Beginning her career as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Rupnagar, she later served as Superintendent of Police in Ludhiana, Pathankot and Chandigarh.
Known for her bold decision-making and disciplined approach, Jagdale has held several key positions, including DIG of Counter Intelligence, Cyber Cell and the Intelligence Bureau.
Her journey from Giripeth to the top ranks of Punjab Police is widely regarded as an inspiration, particularly for young girls in Nagpur and across the country.
