While municipal elections are usually centred on civic services and local issues, candidate selection for the upcoming Corporation polls in the city points to a growing emphasis on financial strength.
Affidavits uploaded late Monday night for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections reveal a sharp rise in the number of ‘crorepati’ candidates, especially those backed by major political parties.
The disclosures highlight the increasing concentration of wealth in the electoral arena, suggesting that financial muscle has become a key factor in ticket distribution, often outweighing ideological alignment or grassroots civic engagement.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power at both the State and national levels, has fielded more than 70 candidates with declared assets exceeding Rs 1 crore. The Indian National Congress (INC) has nominated around 50 such candidates across the city.
Together, the two national parties have introduced over 120 crorepati contenders into a municipal election that once attracted candidates from diverse income backgrounds.
